Fiona Chen is a Chinese-Brazilian artist based in New York City

Working primarily with photography and film, her practice draws from personal and collective experiences navigating cultural identity, womanhood, and queerness. Through experimental and documentary approaches, she seeks to create work that invites catharsis — opening space for people to heal, reflect, and move through their lives with more intention.

Fiona is pursuing a BFA in Film at the School of Visual Arts.

Much of my work is candid in nature. I’m fascinated by the different ways people perceive and interact with the world, and my practice becomes a way of honoring what I witness.

My focus is BTS photography. I find it extremely beautiful and rewarding to document a passion-driven craft. I'm eager to step into sets and observe how stories take shape — how people choose to tell them, and why. Being able to witness and archive this process brings me a deep sense of purpose.

I also love event photography. I feel the most fulfilled when documenting arts-centered gatherings like film screenings and music concerts, especially when these are rooted in social causes like democratization of cultural access and racial/cultural representation in media.

My films explore themes of mental health and social advocacy. Through documentary and experimental approaches, I seek to shed light on the scars people develop as they navigate systems built to work against them. Forgotten (2024) is a documentary that follows the journey of Reflexo Inexorável, a Brazilian artist who immigrated to New York City in pursuit of opportunity, only to encounter exploitation and marginalization. The Body Unlearning Its Weight (2025) is a visual poem that examines the lived experience of bulimia. In Becoming The Miracle That Will Save Me (2026) is an experimental film that traces a personal shift toward confronting fear and seeking a more intentional life.
